SENSE & RESPOND EDUCATION
The individuals in this section have extensive experience conducting executive education and workshops on Sense & Respond concepts, principles, tools, and implementation projects.
*Bob Keiser has mentored executives for over 20 years to help them improve their decision-making and leadership skills. He has worked with senior executives at 450 of the global Fortune 1000 firms.
During his 30 year-career with IBM, Mr. Keiser developed deep insights into the role of leaders who are in dynamically changing market conditions. From 1989 to 2006, he helped launch and grow the IBM Advanced Business Institute (ABI), with the mission of educating senior executives from IBM’s client firms. Mr. Keiser built a global education practice for this market, where he designed, sold, developed and delivered training and mentoring for executives in four continents. His primary focus during his tenure at the ABI was in facilitating strategic IT planning sessions. He has conducted over 250 planning sessions with IBM clients. The facilitative techniques that he employs in his strategic planning sessions include Strategic Alignment, Scenario Planning, Strategic Innovation and Change Management. He taught with the renowned “Chris” Christensen (father of the Case Study technique) at Harvard Business School on facilitation techniques for doctoral students.
Mr. Keiser’s most significant accomplishment is his collaboration with Stephan Haeckel to design and deliver Sense and Respond workshops. Haeckel and Keiser have co-facilitated dozens of workshops around the globe, to assist firms in their design for “adaptiveness.” The Sense and Respond formula for success in rapidly changing markets is to structure the firm NOT to execute one strategy, but ANY and ALL strategies, dependent upon the changing needs of the customer. This “customer-back” orientation, with reconfigurable organizational capabilities, is the heart of the Sense and Respond design for adaptive enterprises.

DESIGNING AN ADAPTIVE ORGANIZATION
*Joe Arteaga is a management consultant specializing in business strategy and organization change. His experience in Sense and Respond dates from 1996, as a contributor to S&R Classes at IBM’s Advanced Business Institute. He has applied S&R principles of adaptive business design to help multiple clients transform their strategic intents into organizational structures for action. He contributed to the early development of a S&R consulting methodology for IBM Business Consulting Services. (See also his entries under “Knowing Earlier Support” and “Commitment Management”)

*Doug McDavid is a Certified Master of Sense and Respond. He is cofounder of Capitalizing Communities,a service company that enables communities of interest to become viable collaborative enterprises. Doug was an executive research consultant and business architect at IBM Global Services and the Almaden Research Center. He has a deep understanding of the concepts and practice of S&R. He led an IBM Academy of Technology study that assessed Sense & Respond as a managerial model, and applied its principles to create a Role and Accountability Design for the development and delivery of service solutions. The study concluded that this design was substantially more effective and less costly than the existing process-centric model.
Over a period of several years, McDavid has done original work addressing the issues of accurately representing business structure and strategy in IT architectures, creating methods for business domain modeling and requirements definition in several industries. He applies his technical and business experience within the Sense & Respond framework, which he helped to develop within IBM based on the work of Steve Haeckel. *Joe Arteaga led a software development project to support Sense & Respond implementations. It codifies the S&R Commitment Management Protocol, as well as the current version of a firm’s evolving Organizational Context (i.e., Reason for Being, Governing Principles, and Role and Accountability Design). This codification of Context, integrated with technology that supports and tracks the status of dynamically changing negotiations about inter-role commitments, is a crucial enabler of scaling an adaptive business design coherently. Alignment of decisionmaking roles is provided by the Role and Accountability design; consistency of the semi-autonomous decisions these roles make is achieved by propagating the current Governing Principles to test every commitment made between enterprise roles for compliance with them. The Commitment Management Protocol provides the rigor necessary for effective negotiations between individuals. *Todd Holzman is a partner in the Cambridge Leadership Group. This consultancy trains people inauthentic communications using a methodology based on the seminal work of Chris Argyris, Emeritus Professor at Harvard University. (Authenticity, Rigor, and Congruence are the three attributes of effective commitment negotiations between individuals — a critical competence in Sense & Respond organizations.) Holzman and his colleagues have delivered a very effective two-day workshop in Sense & Respond implementations.
